What a bizarre box! A one-to-six split LP and two split seven-inches, this collection surely arose from some logistical nightmare which we now consume in unresolved form. Thurston Moore is the reason for the season, drawing challengers on each of the three discs. Starting with the six on one tandem-match of the LP, Moore the mic-conditioner offers the side-long “Creamsikkle”: this is not the Moore of our last encounter on wax, the sober, frowning architect of ‘Flipped-out Bride’ - that atonal minimalist has piqued and punked, now producing a skronky (s)pastiche of hyper-extended guitar; the sliding, pricking, thumping of strings recreate the rabble of cartoon legs spinning mid-air, the body a skank of over-blown riffing. Flip it, and the now extinct Men Who Can’t Love collective-posse suggest six more uses for a side of vinyl, from the false-start lo-fi ballad by Solitary Hunter, and into the one-two(three) punch of tasty noise fragments by Impregnable, Moth Drakula, and Haircut Mountain Transit: “When your nights get a little colder” burns with harsh power ala Kevin Shields (to be seen a little later) - a pure fucking thrill ride, presented in two crests; “Sunday’s Slave” (the longest cut on the side, and a far starker construction than the penultimate Roger Moore) tells of rough footfalls of feedback disguising a broken tempo of terrified ‘scream over the steady monitor of low end drone; “Winona Ryder Voice-over” finds the whistling middle-ground between, with glassy shreds of wilting pitches. Toxic Loincloth come out with a gabber-noise crossover, thrusting, oscillating recklessly through multiple electronic blasts. Last in line, Privy Seals puts their dukes up with “Somniloquy” (sleep-talking or night terrors), arguably (arguably) the harshest patch of grooves in the lot, fitting throaty, wind-tunnel vocals to a torch of feedback, made so much more violent by virtue of its stuttered pace.Thankfully, Moore gives us more with “Unzipped”, his second contribution (and initial 7” side), a raunchy didgeridoo suited with a relentless, mechanical, typewriter rhythm which curiously drops-off in volume in the final third of the track, regaining slowly before cutting out all together off the truncated edge of the elfin disc. On the reverse, Kevin Shields (here Eva Aguila and Amy Vecchione) makes everyone cry with the aural hair-pulling of diptych “Paved Fury” – a rough-hewn skid moving through a handful of slight permutations before and earnest jag of lighter electronic shapes, a mantric repetition struggling to break out in the end – and “Motor Hands” – a bagpipe blast spurts feedback like viscera as an unaccountable serialism appears for a new wave break down. Not to be outdone, Moore flip it with his final entry on the last disc: entitled “Petite Bone”, the gentle, earnest guitar instrumental suggests Chicago (Pajo, Tortoise) of last century; lest you get all teary-eyed, the abrupt, too soon click of the tape machine lets you know he’s just goofin’ (and secretly, that he can play guitar). And in a similar, reverse-outcast pose, Barrabarracuda play garage-wave party jam “Stone Cold Steve Austin at the Cold Stone Creamery” with loudspeaker, shout-along anthem and sassy, slippery guitar, throbbing bass bubbles and rat-a-tat percussion for a uniform turn-out hook to turn you on to dancing – an unexpected endpoint for the package, and surely some sort of violation (follow the disc post-fix for a proper sequence).
To be quite honest, it is not of my opinion that Moore’s side-long “Creamsikkle” merits the mixed-vinyl format; the piece would succeed just as well in a terse 5 minutes or omitted entirely, providing material befitting four or five seven-inches. That said, ‘Thrash Sabbatical’ is a fantastic collection of noise on vinyl, with bonus (though hardly logical) prizes which enliven the bunch like a pinch of cardamom. Mastered by Pete Swanson. Medium pizza box tagged finely with art by Britt and Amanda of Barrabarracuda/Not Not Fun; the three pieces of black vinyl come pro-labeled with sleeves, insert, and a plastic lei. Tres bizarre totale. (Deathbomb Arc LP & 2x7” Box, $25(US)/$28(CAN)/$36(WORLD) HERE)

Pumice - 'Providence' 7" 6€"New Zealand based Stefan Neville is Pumice. My first contact with his music was 'Pumiceraft' (Last Visible Dog, 2004), one of the best record of the last 10 years if you ask me. This new single ep, contains 4 songs recorded in Us in 2006, during his residence at AS 220, Providence, RI. And it's supposed to be the new fucking Pumice classic. Sound appears to be an oddly enchanting mix of outsider folk and near-droning avant garde rock with excursions into rollicking rockabilly, fragile singer/songwriter, and lo-fi psyche-pop explorations. Check a sample on his MYSPACE. Comes in a classical snobbish cover printed by ilcanedicoda, with drawings by S.Neville himself. 250 copies that are supposed to not stay here forever. Ask yourself: "Am i still listening to pop music?'. That's it."

"This one is total damage, psychic vampires spinning around on their heads slathering a bunch of gross cut up pedal wreckage out of maxed out PA's. SL comes straight out of Iowa City's most moist basement corners, anonymous, cult vibe, Asian twins, ready for wreckage. Dynamic, fast, psychedelic harshness, for underground lurking and poisonous raptures of the heart. Re-release of ultra limited Eager Mother cass. Silkscreened artwork by SDReed."
"Changeling is Roy Tatum, LA based multi-instrumentalist and Buried Valley Cass. Label head, who has spent time in such groups as Black Monk and Quintana Roo, while periodically providing drum duties for other LA bands. Changeling is focused around lush ambient guitar drones that provide a lot of layered feeling in their presence. "Beyond the Edge of Dreams" has a lot of duality and contrasts in its sounds. Moving from beautiful cascades that evoke ecstatic ponderance and a life spent looking to distant peaks or shores breaks way into persistent smothering washes of synth like uneasiness leaving this listener feeling quite isolated. Either way, this is a rich listen, cinematic and airy, like early Popul Vuh at its most sorrowful. Silkscreened artwork by SDReed"

Mystified - 'KrellMuse' C52"KrellMuse is a cassette release from Mystified, an experienced multi-genre band that focuses on noisy drones and atmospherics. The Krell were an ancient race from the film Forbidden Planet, who seemed to haunt the planet surface, and the catacombs underneath. KrellMuse asks the question-- if the Krell were to write music for humans, how would it sound? Probably a lot like this release-- gritty, droney, and mysterious." - Thomas Park. No rest, no second thoughts, no quality control (some might say) but always in the "now sound", always mucking about, always trying to catch that ghost..... Changeling - 'Into Great Peace' CS $6
"Ex-Texan Roy Tatum has been holing up in un-air conditioned apartments mumbling out his bleak loner blues drift for the past couple years, but his most recent-ish outpourings have found him plumbing even foggier inner vistas (see Five Thousand Nights, On The Other Side Of You, etc), and Into Great Peace may be the ultimate Changeling surrendering to date. A pair of blurry, beautiful guitar meditations that tread water in the sky, rippling with murmurs and weird waves, cycling through a lost, narcoleptic wash of reverb atmospherics and mirage vibrations. 'LIVE AT AC TEMPLE': Arthur Doyle + Hollow Bush, Demons, Drug Knives DVD $12"In Birmingham, Alabama there is a fountain at the Five Points. The fountain is of a goat lord surrounded by small animals. Water sprays from the mouths of each animal, the streams cross and a pentagram forms. Birmingham is also home to Arthur Doyle and Hollow Bush (Rodger Stella, Bryan Martin). A collaboration between Arthur Doyle and Hollow Bush is a strange thought for anyone who knows Rodger Stella or has seen Arthur Doyle. Even more complex is the image of the two of them behind closed doors discussing the approach and direction of the set to follow. What truly blew my mind was the set itself. Starting out with Doyle's vocal work alone, the sound had a sparse and delicate feeling. Rodger Stella soon joined Doyle with a mirror of vocal samples. Doyle hears himself, smiles, then stops to listen. What followed was a intricate working of vocal loops and cut up sax with hand over beer electronics. Rodger Stella and Arthur Doyle are an odd couple but some how a perfect match. My favorite performance of the 2007. This is followed by the latest in live Demons visual music straight from the Invisible Darkness tour and committed to DVD here for the first time. The night ended with a very rare Drug Knives set - Demons with Stella playing for themselves in the muscle-relaxed atmosphere of each other's company. Drug Knives is just that deep long stare into oblivian."

ORR-001 Tones of Dirt & Bone C40 $5
"Deep meditating drone from the closed mind of Mansfield, OH. Conjured up from two guitars, a simple and effective handful of pedals, and cassettes. Beautifully light and airy yet dark and brooding. Building from the light fluttering and trickling of a stream to the powerful and crashing intensity of Niagra only to fall back onto the beautiful chords of the shore." Same music on both sides. ORR-003 Screen House Music - 'On the Roof' C30 $6

There's no way this could've come out of anywhere but the calm suburbs. No clashing metal or alien soundscapes here. Just the sounds of being round a fire with blankets and wood stump seats. The truly shining moment is the brief breakout of his voice into an all out song near the end of the second track. Truly wonderful pine-tree porch jams." Looking down on stone and earth, a feedback torrent swells. Awe-inspiring chords streak through the grey gloom like stone cutters putting everything in it's right place; a sanctimonious harmony between the give and take of the bleak and the beautiful. Dense and serene." In an edition of 100 tapes with printed labels and art by Borges.
God Willing - 'Cleansing Hours' C14+C16 $9
"Scum Crew member Ren Schofield plays true to his posses title with this sludge noise opus. Pure overdriven electricity oscillates steadfastly while fighting the battle for sonic purity. SK-1 tones chug toward the cliff of oblivion demanding submission from strangled guitar strums trying to reach the surface(a cause inevitably resulting in failure). Spattering waves of crossed frequencies construct an unscalable wall of crushing distorted drones; beauty lies beneath if you can dig that deep. Good vibrations." The duo of Florian Tositti and Antoine Clemot comprise Xochipilli. Angers, France’s Tositti comes from the likes of Ghost Brâmes of the Cerf, The Reggaee, and recent Capricorn Wings projects; Clemot of Paris I cannot affiliate, though I’m sure he’s a busy fellow too. “Aircquocces”, the first half of the two-track ‘Airquocces of the Arc Tones’, emerges from some vocal cooing ala the most recent White Rainbow LP, expanding through bird song and crunchy field-recordings with wispy, breezy highlights, acoustic guitar, and bleary vocals resembling the washed-out Mark Nelson of Pan American. The aggregate of parts plus organ forms a warm, deep drone which deviates with the sounds of a plane overhead, gusts of wind, etc., returning slyly once the object as left the channel. The speaker’s cadence begins to resemble John Balance of Coil more than anything else, and the natural back drop begins to reveal a golden mean through polyphonic chirping of metal strings and electronics; percolation and faint radio scrabble presenting a scattered, yet compelling soundscape. “Cyuti” follows up with more field-recorded ambience - through far more muted – a sea-side din simmering beneath faintly artificial organ drones and mechanical oscillations. It’s actually quite a feat of deception, as the natural quality of these very unnatural elements yawns beneath the organic material, resignifying natural as those sounds which the men control. In color-printed acetate sleeve, hand-numbered to 75 copies. (First Person 3”CDr, £3/5€/$6 HERE)14 Dec 07

These are some of Anni Rossi's earliest recordings, done in the practice rooms at the California Institute of the Arts in 2004. This record differs a great deal from her normal work, and even uses very minimal viola. This is basically a lo-fi pop record, done with piano's, guitar, and beats. Anything from keyboard hand-claps, to looped vocals, warm and wonderful, and only after some of the danciest numbers, does this tape mellow out and end with a beautiful recording of the hymn "Day By Day"." Child Pornography - 'She's Got Legs CD $10(US)/$16(World)"Can one grow old gracefully with a name like Child Pornography? Apparently, yes. On this 3rd full length, She's Got Legs, the youthful perkiness that has always characterized this band is not lost. Left behind though is the lo-fi buzz and hum. With clarity as a weapon, Child Pornography drive decisive guitar slices through epileptic beats for the most memorable autism-pop you've yet to hear. This evolution in sound is not a change to maturity, but just a refining of how much yappering, melo-drama, and exclamation a band can really stuff into the sound known as ROCK. Don't call them electroclash or nu-rave or whatever. These guys are the Rolling Stones of YOUR generation, so get struttin. Mastered by Weasel Walter."

Respected modular synth ARTIST Bill Hutson aka Rale joined up w/ Kyle Mabson (aka the one-man Aqua of Los Angeles) to create what HEALTH calls the greatest live act in LA (yes, my sources are correct). Release the Bats! is like a real label:ROBEDOOR - 'RANCOR KEEPER' CD
"Sunny California... yeah, right. After several limited cdr, vinyl and tape releases (we are talking about 30 releases since 2005, plus various compilation contributions!), the Los Angeles duo finally unleashes their most definite major opus to the masses. Rancor Keeper is a bleak and uncompromising trip into the nightmarish drone-rituals of Robedoor. A sinister haze of bleeding walls, humans hanging from trees and rotten corpses returning from the other side. Recorded spring 2007 at Bored Fortress Studios, Rancor Keeper consists of 4 songs with a total playtime of about 40 minutes. Comparsions has in the past been made to bands like The Skaters and Skullflower, but with their unique occult atmosphere, Robedoor will always stand on their own. No mosh, no core, no fun." Alex: slime, knives, distortion/ Britt: fire, howls, clocks. Limited to 500 copies. Special Dual Plover styled gatefold sleeves with black felt.WARMER MILKS - 'LET YOUR FRIENDS IN' CD
"The current line up of Warmer Milks is probably not what it was yesterday or what it is today. Hell, there is talk of it changing up for next month. Blame this on schizophrenia or an urge to not run in circles but it's how things have always been for the loose group. Founder Michael Turner started Warmer Milks in 2003 and has refused to go backwards regardless of outside (or in house) opinions since it's inception. Warmer Milks have toured by themselves throughout the
United States as well with the likes of Six Organs of Admittance, Bonnie Prince Billy, Arbouretum, Howlin' Rain and others The band did an extensive tour throughout Europe winter of 2007 and will be back on said continent Summer 2008. Let Your Friends In is another chapter in the more brash, aggressive side of Warmer Milks catalog. Leaning more towards skate punk and black metal, the group touched on intensities left behind from nerd critically acclaimed Radish On Light (Troubleman Unlimited 2006) but with a more street rock cum vomitorium feel. The flipside to the first track is a spook gang romper, drumless yet still punching the walls with a force no other rock can manage. The "Let Your Friends In" sessions went down in Shelbyville, Kentuckee at Rove Studios home to engineer Paul Oldham (Speed To Roam, Bonnie Prince Billy Band, ex-Broadcast Choir and Royal Trux) where various members present during the "Soft Walks" sessions (coming March 2008, Animal Disguise) took time to record this scorcher. Featuring usual WM attendees Michael Turner and Greg Backus the two lengthy cuts on "Let Your Friends In" also boasts the addition of Shawn David McMillen (Austin, TX solo artist, Iron Kite member and former member of Ash Castles) on guitar and Paul O. on dead wah guitar. Where the group has flirted with heavy rock in the past, it is easy to say that group now owns heavy rock." WEBSITE

GALACTIC CORE - 'DIRECT TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE HUNABKU' CDr $8"...its Brian Thackeray from Dark Yoga on some crazy fuzz freak-out guitar shredding, recorded with some homies from back east slamming drums (Matthew Clark) and moog bass swoop (Abel Okugawa) on a series of improv burners! recorded at Monkeyclaus, a studio and production facility located in the blue ridge mountains near charlottesville, virginia. covers were screened by brian and dan of dark yoga.....insert illustrated by Brian.. WEBSITE says: "While receiving direct transmissions from the Hunab Ku on Summer Solstice 2007, Brian Thackeray, Matthew Clark, and Abel Okugawa recorded over two and a half hours of raw improvisations in the Monkeyclaus Studio. This took place just after a high noon Sun worship ritual. The session was then mixed a week later, as one 59 minute chron-illogical chunk of the transmission was chosen to be given to the people. The Mayan Factor can be credited with planting seeds, and at times clarifying certain far out notions that encouraged the creation of this particular music. Brian is known for his guitar shredding in West Coast pysche rock bands such as Dark Yoga, and Brave Priest. Matthew is the drummer for Ostinato as well as Grand Banks. Abel is the chief engineer of the Monkeyclaus studio and recorded the session, while laying down some heavy synths. Abel is a fountain of music." EDITION OF 100, mostly sold on their last tour, a few remain. [$5 wholesale to distros]

Rahdunes - 'Alive in '07' CDr"Tumbling weirdness of noise from this San Francisco based duo of Nate Archer and Aaron Coyes. Fuzzing feedback walls of metallic drone stabbing at your ears making them bleed, and the sound of the blood trickles into the recording of these recordings or something? But in a more documentation descriptive approach, this is a bunch of live recordings from a bunch of recent shows. Fully doom drone scapes... somewhere between Black Boned Angel and Mouthus maybe? They got an LP on Emporer Jones out now, and a LP coming on Qbico in the new year along with a LP on Ecstatic Yod. Ripping stuff." 3 panel wrap around cover designed by the band. Limited to 80 copies.
Gown - 'The March Towards The End Continues Despite Any And All Efforts...' CDr

Dogo & Crackerjacks – ‘Bast’; Culver – ‘The Psychic’; and Meursault – ‘Sleeping Debris’ [Capsule Review]
7 Dec 07
- Cassette, CDr, Review
‘Bast’ is the “demo” tape of the now defunct (or is that never was?) Dogo & Crackerjacks, a FFM trio of New Jersey scum-punks reveling in the heart murmur of the Garden State. Six songs with sardonic titles looking like they came off a Jesus Lizard disc (“Laugh”, “Dark & Lonely”, “Carcinogenic”), they’ve got slow tempos and a deep bass rhythm, agonized duel caterwauling from the ladies and only the smear of depressed strings to indicate a guitar in the mix. Love Life probably went through a similar configuration before settling on the lighter sounds on which they settled; Babes in Toyland too. The ritual chant and contemptuous drone of guitars reminds one of many an AMREP outfit (definitely NOT Supernova) with all the pacing concerns of Swans or Big Black. Gold-sprayed tapes come with two-sided glossy J-card. Available for $5(US) from d.i.h.d. HERE. The last time we saw the one-manned Culver was on a similarly little 3” called ‘The Witches Ladder’, and like that track, ‘The Psychic’ is a single, 20-minute drone piece. Were they both a little shorter, they would make nice complimentary halves of a 12”, as they both sustain massive drones layered above and below with counter-drones. For the disc at hand, the dirty roar of the central drone belies the deep, clean hum beneath: a tone of the earth pulsing slowly with tectonic energy and the occultist energy projecting sinister gradations through the fray (again, ala Robedoor). 3” CDr comes in acetate sleeve with color printing, hand-numbered to 75 and available HERE from First Person.
Meursault is Shaun Falconer and ‘Sleeping Debris’ is yet another extraordinary example of Students of Decay’s drone-heavy guitar specialty. Spiritually-affiliated with Loren Conors, Fred Frith, and Tom Carter, these amazing half-drones shimmer with the vibrancy of clean electric guitar and high-definition sound. Two double-digit pieces spaced by three shorter works, the title track is pure ‘Order of Things’ by Tarentel, while “Friday Delivered into Light” recalls Carter’s expansive ‘Monument’, with equal parts micro guitar introspection and macro ambient awe. The droning strings of bagatelle “Winters First Month” and the piano of “-“ make for strong contrasts of timbre and a crushing survey of talent. CDr is hand-stamped, with great art by Martin Hodge on a full-color, standard hard-stock sleeve. Very recommended, and available for $8 from Students of Decay HERE.

All this and more from Pendu Sound Recordings:
TALIBAM! - 'The Excusable Earthling' LP (2007) PSR-0022 $13(US)
"PENDU SOUND RECORDINGS is pleased to present the first full length vinyl platter from Brooklyn's own self-described 'harmoniacal' trio. 34 minutes of spontaneous anarchic abandon ranging from frenetic blasts to heavy grooves to quieter, creepier tiptoe blips and percussive hits. The Excusable Earthling is a chaotic, fun, and all-around sick record!"
GRYN BRVS - 'Grail Fruit of Les Prix Chauns' cassette (2007) PSR-0028 $7.5(US)
"UK-based duo, Gryn Brvs unleash a session of lucid improvised tonal scapers and oscillating drones of mixer feedback. Beautiful alchemy drawn from the collective unconscious and spilled onto magnetic tape. Recorded live with a stereo microphone. No edits, just pure catharsis." Edition of 50
GHOST MOTH/FOSSILS Split CS (2007) PSR-0027 $7.5(US)
"These two bands are perfectly juxtaposed for a split, complimenting each other in their unique ways. Both create atmospheric spontaneous primitivist jamms from junk and homemade electronics. Ghost Moth is a trio that features multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter, a long time veteran of NYC's avant-garde. They open their side with a with a clarinet-led ecstatic ripper before collaging into a hissy live damaged flute jammy and lastly groping a clanging broken-scaper laced with late-night trumpet. Fossils begin their side with random scrapes and bluesey reverberations before heading into abstract scuzz and ghostly haunts. Must pick up a copy. They'll be going fast!" Edition of 75
ABUSE REPORT - 'El Diablo Esta En Casa' cassette (2007) PSR-0026 $7.5(US)
"More dripping analogue goodness gurgling up from a dark and murky bog. A few jamms to help carry the weight of today's hangover into tomorrow. Bad vibes and a grin." Edition of 25
ABUSE REPORT - 'Abuse Report' cassette (2007) PSR-0024
"Ghostly transmissions. Caverned stalactites of dripping feedback and rumblings from the hollow fleece. Echoed chambers of sonic fuzz and warm analogue oscillations. A nailbiting session from Todd Brooks (Mialessot / Ghost Moth) with Max Gudmunson and Matt Folden (K.P. / Hatefuck)." Recorded live direct to walkman. Hand-stamped and painted cassettes. Edition of 20
v/a - 'Getting Rid of the Glue' LP (2006) PSR-0016 $12(US)
"Getting Rid of the Glue is a tribute to the continuing positive influence of John Cage on free /improv /creative /& noise music. It is a compilation of New York/Chicago musicians representing a wide-ranging diversity of experimental music that is both new and relevant to a chaotic and unstable 21st century." featuring: Dirty Churches, Spin-17, K.P., BIG A little a, Fessenden, Eager Meek, Mialessot w/ Daniel Carter & Old Ghost, Maria Chavez, Talibam!, and Excepter. Flux Bouquet - 'First' CDr $7
"From the arid wastelands of the upper midwest comes this lush, first offering from flux bouquet—aptly titled first. Chris Miller (Number None, Rebis) and Steve Fors (unseen|unknown) orchestrate cacophonies of melodic decadence with vintage and obsolete electronics, guitars, and vocals. At times both noisy and beautiful, fb weaves shimmering tapestries of sonic expanse, only to leave them shredded on the floor in piles of feedback and static." 22 minutes, color inkjet insert on cardstock, edition of 50.
